The Visitor
A stormy eve hath come and gone
Which filled my heart with fear
As I read a classic tale
Of love and lover's tears
The night remained a battle
As the rain continued on
I had come to read in silence
But the thunder proved me wrong
Suddenly, the lights died down
The room, black as my soul
I thought I saw a vision
Of a girl I once did know
A girl who shared her love with me
Our feelings strong and true
Until she met another
And her hatred for me grew
After I had lost my love
I was never quite the same
My friends constantly watched me
For fear I'd go insane
Many nights I sat alone
More than a tear I shed
Because like other people
When I was cut I bled
A clap of thunder startled me
I awakened from my spell
But the vision of my love remained
I, startled, gave a yell
"Who is this who torments me
And fills my heart with fright?"
Her reply was simple
"My love, I died this night."
"Your love?  You never loved me
Because I was not rich
Go find your wealthy beggar
To dig your lousy ditch."
My words were uttered more from fear
Than what I really meant
I know that she believed this
As she paused in her lament
"My love, I never hated you."
Came her sweet reply
"But I did not deserve you.
Thus, for you, I died."
The thunder sounded once again
And my trance was broke
I cursed the miserable demons
Who laughed as I awoke
But as I glanced around the room
My true love had gone
I know that she awaits me
In a realm beyond
